UK Transport Secretary promotes low carbon transport in Hong Kong (24/08/2009)

UK Secretary of State for Transport, Lord Andrew Adonis, visited China, South Korea and Hong Kong from 19 to 24 August 2009.  During his trip to China and Hong Kong, he held discussions about the impact of transport emissions and heard about their efforts to reduce them. He also promoted business opportunities for UK transport business in China and Hong Kong.

In his busy programme on 24 August, Lord Adonis met Edward Yau, Secretary for the Environment, to discuss transport emissions and Hong Kong's plans for electric vehicles. He called on Yau Shing-mu, Acting Secretary for Transport to discuss Hong Kong's transport infrastructure. He met Sir Chung-kong Chow, Chief Executive Officer of Mass Transit Railway Corporation (MTRC) to discuss railway policy and visited Kowloon Station which will connect the planned Express Rail Link terminus. Lord Adonis met leading shipping industry representatives to discuss maritime emissions and a leading group of climate change experts to discuss transport emissions.

In addition, he also travelled on an Alexander Dennis bus from MTRC Austin Station to Hong Kong Island. Alexander Dennis Limited, Britain's biggest bus manufacturer, is a major supplier of buses to the Hong Kong franchised bus companies. They have recently supplied Euro 4 standard double deck buses to Citybus, China Light & Power, Kowloon Motor Bus, MTRC and New World First Bus and have recently won further orders for Euro 5 standard buses.
