How to register a birth or a death
Consular registration of births and deaths is not a legal requirement.
Consular birth registration
A local Hong Kong birth certificate is sufficient for most purposes, including British passport applications. Consular birth registration provides your child with a British-style birth certificate. A permanent and accessible record of the birth registration is also maintained at the General Register Office (GRO) in Southport.
Please note that the British Consulate-General Hong Kong can only issue Consular Birth Certificates for children born after 1 July 1997.
The following documentation should be provided: originals of all documents must accompany the application, photocopies cannot be accepted. The original documents will be returned to you.
- a completed birth registration form;
- the child’s local birth certificate;
- parents’ passports;
- parent(s) full (unabridged) British birth certificate(s);
- parent(s) registration/naturalization certificate (if applicable);
- parents' marriage certificate; and
- the appropriate fee.
We aim to process applications for birth registrations within one working day.
Consular Death Registration
We can provide a British-style death certificate for a British Citizen who dies in Hong Kong.
