School Visits
Option 1 :- Energy conversation - DIY from teachers and students
Po Leung Kuk Yao Ling Sun College
No. 3 Estate Secondary School,
Shek Wai Kok Estate, Tsuen Wan, New Territories
ESD (Energy) Policy
Po Leung Kuk Yao Ling Sun College is a full-scale 29 classes government-subsidized secondary school — a standard estate school. The school is shielded on two sides with high-rise public housing estate — under the shade half day and also a lack of natural ventilation across classrooms. A third side faces a busy slope road and the remaining side to our own playground — implying noise pollution throughout the day. Air-conditioning is the biggest drain of electric power during summer. In 2004, we hit HK$53,000 electric bill in one summer month. We started to study into energy saving measures.
We built our own campus-wide energy saving system in 2004-2005, primarily to stop wasting energy like running air-conditioners in empty rooms, leaving air-conditioners on overnight throughout a long weekend, etc. We train pupils towards reasonable use of classroom air-conditioners at ambient temperature above 28C or over 85% relative humidity. We ban demanding cooler room in summer yet having pullovers on while sweating, etc. (not without disappointments). By all these measures, we limited the electricity bill to HK$40,000 for two peak summer months.
We insist educating pupils to make good use of energy resources, let them try to generate electricity manually on our locally built experimental bicycle generator, let them participate in energy-saving campaigns, let them contribute their effort in patterning renewable generators, etc. We do have success stories to tell. We think our school is situated on a wind path for the prevalent north-easterly wind in winter and the occasional reversed low pressure driven southerly stormy wind in summer. We are in good position to educate pupils of variable factors related to issues about renewable energy generation, and hence a living topic towards popular science education for all.
Option 2 :- Whole School Engagement
Tin Shui Wai Catholic Primary School
28 Tin Pak Rd, Tin Shui Wai,
Yuen Long, New Territories
Environmental Sustainability Education (ESE)
We strongly believe that everyone can be an outstanding manager of the Earth and that one of the major goals of education is to protect the environment. Consequently, we have implemented a holistic and cross-disciplinary curriculum with extended authentic learning tasks to embed the positive value of environmental sustainability in the hearts of pupils and to develop proper behaviour in their daily life.
We have applied Task-based Learning (TBL), Concept-based Learning (CBL) as well as Life Incident approaches in our curriculum. There are four major areas in our school-based environmental sustainability curriculum (ESC). These are economic sustainability, social sustainability, cultural sustainability and ecological sustainability. We have also implemented legal education in our ESC so as to provide all-round learning experiences for learners. We have provided authentic learning experiences for stakeholders and kindergarten children in our organic farm in order to promote the practice of environmental sustainability development in the community.
Option 3 :- School Management and Building an ESD Community Cluster
Baptist Wing Lung Secondary School
Phase II, 6A, Ho Hing Circuit,
Tuen Mun, New Territories
Our school strives to promote environmental education. In order to arouse the awareness of environmental protection among our students, our school has organized various activities by which students have become more concerned about the well-being of the globe. We have implemented school-based environmental education lessons in the curriculum of junior forms. It provides opportunities for students to explore the issues related to local sustainable development. Aiming at building up a green school network in our community, we work as a partner with some primary schools to implement environmental education in their schools. The effort and achievements of our school are widely recognized. Owing to our contribution, we have won School Honours Award under Schools Environmental Award Scheme for 5 consecutive years. We have gained the honour of “Green School”.
